Welcome to Anjara! These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of Anjara Project services. By creating an account or using our services, you agree to these Terms.

Please read carefully. If you don’t agree, please don’t use our services.

1. Acceptance of Terms

1.1 Agreement

By accessing or using Anjara services (email, blog, storage, communication tools, etc.), you agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy.

1.2 Age Requirement

You must be at least 16 years old to use Anjara services. If you’re under 16, please don’t create an account.

1.3 Capacity to Contract

By agreeing to these Terms, you represent that you have the legal capacity to enter into a binding contract.

1.4 Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms occasionally. We’ll notify you of significant changes via email. Continued use after changes means you accept the new Terms.

2. Account Registration and Security

2.1 Account Creation

To use Anjara services, you must:

Provide accurate information (username, recovery email)

Choose a strong password

Be responsible for account security

Not share your account credentials

2.2 Account Responsibility

You are responsible for:

All activities under your account

Maintaining confidentiality of your password

Immediately notifying us of unauthorized access

Using services in compliance with these Terms

2.3 One Account Per Person

You may only create one free account per person. Multiple accounts for abuse or circumventing limits is prohibited.

2.4 Account Security

We recommend:

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

Use a unique, strong password

Regularly review account activity

Don’t access your account on public/shared computers without logging out

WordPress Blog (Federated)

Self-hosted WordPress installation

ActivityPub federation enabled

Your own subdomain or custom domain

Nextcloud Storage

Private cloud storage

5GB free storage, expandable

File sync across devic

Calendar, contacts, collaboration tools

Mastodon Services

Access to social.anjara.org (free public instance)

Custom Mastodon instance hosting (€10/month)

Matrix Chat

Access to matrix.anjara.org

End-to-end encrypted messaging

Federation with Matrix network

WriteFreely

Minimalist blogging platform

Fediverse integration

Free unlimited use

3.2 Service Availability

We strive for 99.9% uptime

Scheduled maintenance will be announced in advance

We’re not liable for temporary service interruptions

Emergency maintenance may occur without notice

3.3 Service Modifications

We reserve the right to:

Modify, suspend, or discontinue services with 90 days notice

Update features and functionality

Change service specifications (with notice for paid services)

4. Acceptable Use Policy

4.1 Permitted Uses

You may use Anjara services for lawful purposes including:

Personal and business communication

Content creation and publishing

File storage and sharing

Collaboration and productivity

4.2 Prohibited Uses

You may NOT use Anjara services for:

Illegal Activities:

Any illegal activity under Italian, EU, or your local laws

Copyright or trademark infringement

Distribution of illegal content

Fraud, scams, or phishing

Abuse and Harm:

Harassment, threats, or bullying

Hate speech or incitement to violence

Distribution of malware or viruses

Spamming or unsolicited bulk email

Denial of service attacks

Inappropriate Content:

Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) – zero tolerance, reported to authorities

Non-consensual intimate images

Graphic violence or gore (outside of news/documentary context)

Content promoting self-harm

Service Abuse:

Automated bulk account creation

Circumventing service limits

Attempting to breach security

Reverse engineering our systems (except for security research with disclosure)

Reselling services without authorization

Spam:

Sending unsolicited commercial email

Mass messaging on Mastodon/Matrix

SEO spam on blogs

Fake accounts for spam purposes

4.3 Enforcement

Violations may result in:

Warning and request to cease

Temporary account suspension

Permanent account termination

Reporting to law enforcement (for illegal content)

Legal action (for damages)

4.4 Reporting Abuse

Report violations to: abuse@service.anjara.org

We’ll investigate and take appropriate action.

5. Content and Intellectual Property

5.1 Your Content

You retain all rights to content you create:

Your emails, blog posts, files, messages

You grant us only the technical license to store and deliver your content

We don’t claim ownership of your content

5.2 License You Grant Us

By using our services, you grant Anjara a limited license to:

Store your content on our servers

Transmit your content (email delivery, federation, etc.)

Back up your content for disaster recovery

Display your content where you’ve made it public (blogs, Mastodon posts)

This license ends when you delete your content or account.

5.3 Public Content

Content you make public (blog posts, Mastodon toots, etc.):

May be viewed, shared, and federated by others

May be indexed by search engines

May remain cached even after deletion

You’re responsible for what you choose to share publicly

5.4 Copyright Compliance

If you believe content on Anjara infringes your copyright:

Include: Your contact info, description of copyrighted work, location of infringing content, statement of good faith belief

We’ll investigate and remove if appropriate

Repeat copyright infringers:

Accounts may be terminated

5.5 Our Intellectual Property

Anjara trademarks, logos, and service marks are our property:

Don’t use without permission

Exception: Factual references (“I use Anjara for email”)

Open-source software components retain their respective licenses

6. Pricing and Payments

6.1 Free Services

Our free tier includes:

Email: 1GB storage

WordPress: 1GB storage

Nextcloud: 5GB storage

Mastodon access: Unlimited

Matrix: Unlimited

WriteFreely: Unlimited

No credit card required. Free forever.

6.2 Paid Services

Storage Extensions (One-Time Payments):

Email: 2.5GB upgrade (€5), then €10 per 5GB

WordPress: €10 per 5GB

Nextcloud: €5 per 5GB

Subscription Services:

Custom Mastodon instance: €10/month

6.3 Payment Terms

Payments processed via Stripe or PayPal

One-time purchases are non-recurring

Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled

All prices in Euros (€)

Prices include applicable VAT/taxes

6.4 Refunds

One-Time Purchases (Storage):

Refund within 14 days if unused

No refund after storage is used

7. Data and Privacy

7.1 Privacy Commitment

We never sell your data

We don’t scan your content for advertising

We don’t track you across the web

7.2 Data Ownership

You own your data

You can export your data anytime

You can delete your data/account anytime

7.3 Data Retention

Active accounts: Data retained indefinitely

Inactive free accounts: Deleted after 12 months of inactivity (with warning)

Deleted accounts: Data purged within 90 days

Legal requirements: Some billing records retained up to 7 years

7.4 Data Security

We implement industry-standard security:

Encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS)

Encrypted storage for sensitive data

Regular security audits

Daily backups

However, no system is 100% secure. You’re responsible for your password security.

8. Federation and Third-Party Services

8.1 Mastodon and ActivityPub Federation

When you use federated services:

Your public posts are shared with other servers

We don’t control other servers in the Fediverse

Other servers have their own privacy policies and terms

Content may remain on other servers even after you delete it from Anjara

Federation is voluntary – you control what you make public

8.2 Matrix Federation

Matrix messages federate across the Matrix network

End-to-end encryption provides privacy even across servers

We don’t control other Matrix servers

8.3 External Links

Our services may link to third-party websites

We’re not responsible for external content or services

Third-party sites have their own terms and privacy policies

9. Service Limitations

9.1 Storage Limits

Enforced storage limits:

Free email: 1GB

Free WordPress: 1GB

Free Nextcloud: 5GB

Exceeding limits: Upload disabled until you delete files or purchase extension

9.2 Bandwidth and Usage

We don’t have strict bandwidth limits, but reserve the right to:

Throttle excessive usage that impacts other users

Contact you about unusual usage patterns

Suspend accounts involved in abuse (DDoS, spam, etc.)

9.3 Email Sending Limits

To prevent spam:

Reasonable sending limits apply (generous for normal use)

Bulk email requires prior approval

Spam complaints may result in sending suspension

9.4 Fair Use

All “unlimited” or high-limit services are subject to fair use:

Services are for normal personal/business use

Not for resale or redistribution

Not for illegal file sharing or excessive resource consumption

We’ll contact you before taking action on fair use concerns

10. Account Termination

10.1 Your Right to Terminate

You can close your account anytime:

Settings → Delete Account

Export your data first (deletions are permanent)

No cancellation fees

Subscriptions: Service continues until end of billing period

10.2 Our Right to Terminate

We may suspend or terminate accounts for:

Violation of these Terms

Illegal activity

Abuse or harassment

Non-payment (for paid services)

Extended inactivity (free accounts, with warning)

10.3 Termination Process

For violations:

Warning (when appropriate)

Temporary suspension to investigate

Permanent termination if confirmed

Immediate termination for severe violations (illegal content, CSAM, etc.)

Notice:

We’ll email you at your recovery address

Explain reason for termination

Provide opportunity to appeal (except for illegal content)

10.4 Data After Termination

30-day grace period to export data

After 30 days, data permanently deleted

Backups purged within 90 days

Some data may be retained for legal compliance

11. Warranties and Disclaimers

11.1 Service “As Is”

Services provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE”:

We don’t guarantee error-free operation

We don’t guarantee uninterrupted service

We don’t guarantee data won’t be lost (though we do backups)

You’re responsible for maintaining your own backups of critical data

11.2 No Warranty

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW:

We disclaim all warranties, express or implied

Including warranties of merchantability, fitness for purpose, non-infringement

We don’t guarantee services will meet your specific requirements

11.3 Your Responsibility

You’re responsible for:

Evaluating services for your needs

Backing up critical data

Securing your account

Complying with applicable laws

12. Limitation of Liability

12.1 Limitation

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW:

We’re not liable for:

Indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages

Lost profits, data, or business opportunities

Damages from service interruptions or data loss

Damages from unauthorized access to your account

Damages from third-party actions (federation partners, etc.)

12.2 Maximum Liability

Our total liability is limited to:

For free services: €0 (you paid nothing)

For paid services: Amount you paid in the last 12 months (maximum €100)

12.3 Exceptions

This limitation doesn’t apply to:

Our gross negligence or willful misconduct

Liability that cannot be excluded by law

Data breaches caused by our negligence

13. Indemnification

13.1 Your Agreement to Indemnify

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Anjara, Hex IT Group, Red Viper Technologies, and our employees from:

Your violation of these Terms

Your violation of laws or regulations

Your content and its impact on others

Copyright or IP infringement claims related to your content

Third-party claims arising from your use of services

13.2 Process

If we’re subject to a claim:

We’ll notify you

You’ll cooperate in defense

We reserve the right to assume exclusive defense

14. Dispute Resolution

14.1 Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Italy and the European Union.

14.2 Jurisdiction

Disputes will be resolved in the courts of Bologna, Italy.

14.3 Informal Resolution First

Before legal action:

We’ll attempt to resolve informally

Most issues can be resolved through discussion

14.4 No Class Actions

Disputes must be brought individually, not as class actions or representative actions.

15. General Provisions

15.1 Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Anjara.

15.2 Severability

If any provision is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.

15.3 No Waiver

Our failure to enforce any right doesn’t waive that right.

15.4 Assignment

You can’t transfer your account or these Terms without our consent.
We may assign these Terms to affiliates or in case of merger/acquisition.

15.5 Force Majeure

We’re not liable for delays or failures due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control (natural disasters, war, strikes, internet outages, etc.).

15.6 Survival

Provisions that should survive termination (IP, liability, disputes) will survive.

15.7 Language

These Terms are provided in English. Translations may be provided for convenience, but English version controls in case of conflict.

16. Special Provisions

16.1 Open Source

Many Anjara services use open-source software:

Respective open-source licenses apply to those components

You may have additional rights under open-source licenses

16.2 Beta Features

We may offer beta/experimental features:

Marked as “beta” or “experimental”

Provided as-is with no warranties

May be discontinued or changed

Use at your own risk

16.3 API and Developer Access

If we provide API access:

Rate limits apply

May be modified or discontinued

Abuse will result in API access revocation

16.4 Educational and Non-Profit Use
